This channel is amazing. Absolutely tickles the mechanical side of my brain i cant itch with a job in my city. Could it be an idea to introduce a groove in to both sides of where the bolt fastens too and then producing an inverse of this on a washer such that when the bolt is tightened the grooves engage and prevent that deformation you encountered. Just an idea, might be too small of a geometry to actually produce but it could be an elegant solution while only, potentially increasing the height of the guides, which is acceptable given their use.

It's a race between a machine... and another machine with a man.

I know the challenge of this project was to make the part the way you did it, chipping away a little at a time while maintaining just enough fixturing stability, but just in case you want to go into mass production there's a bit of a cheat code for these kinds of projects: using a fusible alloy. Something like Tru-alloy / roto281 / whatever everyone's calling 58% bismuth / 42% tin is a good fusible alloy for fixturing parts. Basically you mill half your part, entomb it in the fusible alloy, mill the alloy square referencing the half that isn't entombed, then finish milling the other half. Once the milling is done, you just melt the alloy back off and save it for the next project.

might I ask what stones you use for polishing on the lathe? I ask because I'm thinking of buying a lathe once I work up some money, and I'd like to know some good brands. cheers from Canada!

Etch your initials on the flat part of the head. Coat it with wax. Use a pointed stylus to carve your initials in the wax. Apply a few drops of ferric chloride solution to those areas. Rinse. This hammer would have looked a lot nicer if you made a long taper from the knurled part to the head. Still a nice looking project.
